MyLondon Review

Every now and again I test a bit of tech that blows me away. And the Minirig portable speaker is definitely one of these.

I've read some very glowing reports about the Minirig range, a cluster of Bluetooth speakers that profess to be among the most powerful and loudest on the market, and I was itching to see for myself just what they were like.

The nice people at Minirig, which is a British company, incidentally, sent me their latest Minirig 3 speaker to test, and it's just been upgraded over its predecessor, the Minirig 2, to pack in a massive 100ah battery and more than double the power.

When it arrived, I was actually quite taken aback by the size of it. I've tested a lot of Bluetooth speakers and the best ones are often the smallest ones, as it's nice to have something you can carry in your pocket that still packs a punch.

The Minirig 3 is a hefty beast, and it will take quite a chunky pocket to carry it in, so think of it more as a back-pack buddy and you'll soon get over its bulk.

You'll also completely forget about its size the minute you play some music through it. Because it's absolutely phenomenal. It has a 40w amplifier, which may sound a bit weedy, but make no mistake, the Minirig puts out some incredible sound.

The bass is terrific, the high notes are perhaps slightly muffled, but then it doesn't have a tweeter. That said, the sound is remarkably well balanced, for such a small device. Yes, that's right, it suddenly feels small.

I played this alongside my six-speaker home surround sound system and, while it didn't put it to shame, it certainly put up a credible fight.

The housing is solid, and splash resistant, the Bluetooth connection is a doddle to set up, despite there only being one button to control everything it does, including volume, and it even comes with a funky zip-up case, which it can play sound through.

And I haven't even got to the best bit yet...
