Noise and hiss

All speakers exhibit a background hiss or static noise due to the noise of electronic circuits. The Minirig has a very efficient speaker driver, which allows it to go very loud. However, because it is very efficient, the electric noise is amplified by the speaker. Every effort has been made to minimise the hiss of the Minirig, and the "signal to noise" ratio is very good. However, it may be noticeable at low volumes and when you are very close.

There are a few tips that can help:

  1. Use Bluetooth mode when possible. AUX mode adds noise due to the analogue/digital conversion, so the lowest noise levels will be achieved using the digital Bluetooth connection.
  2. In AUX mode, turn up the signal and turn down the volume on the Minirig. This will lower the noise and improve the sound quality.
  3. Charging noise. Charging your Minirig from a computer and playing music from its audio aux socket may result in higher noise due to the creation of a ground loop due to the cables. To eliminate this, try the following
    • Use Bluetooth
    • Try a different USB supply
    • Unplug the charger and charge your Minirig when you are not using it.
    • Use a battery powered audio source if possible.
    • If you must keep the Minirig on charge, a ground loop isolator product can be used inline with the 3.5mm cable
  4. Check your music. Some music, especially older music, contains background noise in the recording. Turn the volume down to 0 to check for this.
  5. Speaker placement. Try moving the Minirig further away and pointing it up instead of towards you. Then turn the volume up and adjust the EQ, or use the "tilt EQ" to compensate.
