Temwa's 20th Anniversary Dinner was a huge success!
Over 120 people gathered at The Mount Without in central Bristol to celebrate the last 20 years of Temwa. They were able to raise almost £23,000 for disadvantaged communities in Malawi, and one lucky guest went away with a Minirig Mini 2 amongst other prizes donated from local businesses.
Some of the main problems Temwa are helping to address are:
-
a chronic shortage of food, often with periods of starvation
-
high rates of HIV and AIDS
-
limited access to basic education
-
deforestation, which causes flooding and displacement
-
only one hospital in the region, which lacks fundamental equipment, staff and medicine
-
very few roads and limited access to transport
-
limited employment opportunities
From initially supporting a small community of just 2,000 they now work with around 55,000 people. Since Temwa began they have:
-
Trained over 6,200 farmers in sustainable farming practices and building climate resilience to help increase household income.
-
Tested over 35,900 people for HIV and supported those who are HIV positive through our counselling service.
-
Helped over 2,334 schoolchildren improve their literacy.
-
Supported 201 secondary school children with a bursary.
-
Planted over 1.6 million trees to help combat climate change whilst helping community members develop forest-friendly livelihoods.
-
Helped 13,146 men, women and children access safe, clean water and hygiene education.
-
Distributed more than 1,300 microloans to small business entrepreneurs.
